The Art of Greg Brown

September 30, 2005
From the site:

Greg’s art is hard to define, but only because it embraces contradictions. In fact, Greg himself is a contradiction. His art could not be otherwise. Is his art serious or is it not? Is he serious or is he not? This is the crux of the matter and where the fascination begins.

Contractions are unsettling. They keep you up in the air as does Greg and the art he creates. But contradictions are also what keep the viewer completely involved with his work and what the magic is all about. [via]

Grab the first opportunity

Here an interesting story about a young boy who want to marry a girl. This story is interesting because it gives a lot of motivation in our daily life.

A young man wished to marry the farmer's beautiful daughter. He went to
the farmer to ask his permission. The farmer looked him over and said,
"Son, go stand out in that field. I'm going to release three bulls,
one at a time. If you can catch the tail of any one of the three bulls, you
can marry my daughter."

The young man stood in the pasture awaiting the first bull. The barn door
opened and out ran the biggest, meanest-looking bull
he had ever seen. He decided that one of the next bulls had to be a better
choice than this one, so he ran over to the side and let the bull pass
through the pasture out the back gate. The barn door opened again.
Unbelievable. He had never seen anything so big and fierce in his life.

It stood pawing the ground, grunting, slinging slobber as it eyed him.
Whatever the next bull was like, it had to be a better choice than this
one. He ran to the fence and let the bull pass through the pasture, out
the back gate.

The door opened a third time. A smile came across his
face. This was the weakest, scrawniest little bull he had ever seen. This
one was his bull. As the bull came running by, he positioned himself just
right and jumped at just the exact moment. He grabbed... but the bull had
no tail![via]

Moral value:
Life is full of opportunities. Some will be easy to take
advantage of, some will be difficult. But once we let them pass (often
in hopes of something better), those opportunities may never again be
available. So always grab the first opportunity . . .

'Smart Concrete' for levees

Deborah D. L. Chung’s mixture of carbon fibers and conventional concrete, is an electrically conductive “smart concrete” (developed at the Composite Materials Research Laboratory) that can be continuously monitored for changes in electrical resistance as the material goes under stress. With smart concrete, short carbon fibers are added to the conventional concrete mixture. This modification gives the concrete the ability to detect stress and tiny deformations in the concrete. In the presence of structural flaws -- within a levee made of smart concrete, for example -- the concrete's electrical resistance increases. This change can be detected by electrical probes placed on the outside of structures.[via] link

Shiitake Mushroom Log

Shiitakes, also known as Black Forest mushrooms and Chinese black mushrooms, are the most popular cultivated wild mushroom in North America. Originally, they grew wild in the forests of Japan, and the first written reference to them dates back to 199 AD when the Japanese Emperor was presented with Shiitakes. They quickly became prized both as a delicacy and as a folk remedy. Your Shiitake Mushroom Log will produce a flavorful crop of mushrooms every 8-12 weeks for years.

Vacuum to save your Gizmos

Well, that's something I had never thought about. Apparently, cameras, lenses, films, discs, precious metal, jewelry, silverware, etc. can suffer from the harmful effects of moisture.

So if you're worried about the well-being of your favourite gizmos and gems, here's Vam Dry Box, a rather bad-looking but hopefully efficient box that provides an environment of anti-moisture and anti-oxidization.

DNA Art!

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us
Here's an interesting take on commissioning portraits, which, according to a recent article I read, is on the rise again (among those who have the desire and the money to do that kind of thing). DNA11 can take a sample of your DNA (basically you send them a vial of your saliva) and their labs create an electronic snapshot of your DNA and print them on canvas to create an artwork of...well, you. The resulting DNA portrait is an abstract geometric composition that looks curiously digital. You can custom order your portrait from a choice of different sizes and color schemes.

For those of you who are thinking about the security implications of submitting your DNA...well, they have that covered in their FAQs. And how would you really know that the resulting artwork is your particular DNA interpretation? I don't think you can know for sure - I mean you'd have to just trust them. I do find many scientific imagery beautiful, but I don't find the DNA portraits all that visually compelling enough to want to hang one on my wall, but it would make an interesting conversation piece or a gift for that person who has everything.

Secret of largest fish revealed

September 25, 2005

Researchers in Belize have tracked the sharks as they dive almost a kilometre in search of food, and find shoals of spawning fish in order to eat the eggs.

The sharks grow to 20m in length, and are listed as vulnerable to extinction.

The researchers believe their findings will help to plan tourism operations around whale sharks in a way which does not harm the creatures themselves.

These new, unprecedented insights into the whale shark's world come from the Belize Barrier Reef, the world's second largest barrier reef system and a site given UN World Heritage status.[via]
